Richard Thank you. Very nice cane.
The Isthmus is named for the narrow bridge of land that joins two continents: the Central American isthmus, where the laurel for every Walt Cane grows and where each cane is hand-fitted. It pairs a solid laurel wood shaft with a handle design of its own, a flat T-top with softly rounded ends, shaped by hand and grain-matched at the joint.
If you like knowing exactly what you're holding, start with the wood. Our short guide, What Is Laurel Wood?, covers where it grows, why we chose it, and how it's sourced.
Like every Walt Cane, it's made from solid laurel air-cured for two years, then hand-fitted and finished with six hand-rubbed coats of hardening oil: dense enough for real daily weight, and made to be kept, not replaced.
Specifications:
Material: Solid laurel wood (laurel macho), imported from Central America
Construction: Two pieces of laurel, handle and shaft, hand-fitted and grain-matched at the joint
Handle style: Isthmus handle (our own design), a flat T-top
Handle width: 5 inches
Length: 37 inches as standard
Shaft diameter: 1.20 inches
Finish: Hand-rubbed hardening oil, 6 coats
Tip: Weighted rubber tip for stability and traction
Need a different height? Every cane ships at 37 inches. If you need it shorter, the shaft can be cut down after it arrives — that part is done on your end, and any hardware or woodworking shop can trim one and refit the tip in a few minutes. Measure carefully, because a cane that has been cut can't be returned. If you need taller than 37 inches, that's a custom order with an additional cost and a lead time of about four weeks: email us and we'll quote it. Not sure what length you need? Our two-minute fit guide shows how to measure.
About your cane: Each Isthmus is fitted from its own two pieces of laurel, so the grain, color, and figure of the cane you receive will vary from the one photographed. That variation is what makes every piece one of a kind.
Care: Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid standing water. Re-oil once or twice a year to maintain the finish for decades.
