Hand-Carved Dog Head Walking Cane in Rare Laurel Wood

The handle of this cane began as a single block of rare laurel — a dense tropical hardwood shot through with chocolate, violet, and smoke-colored streaks that no dye or stain can imitate. The carver worked with that figure rather than against it, letting the dark ribbon grain sweep back over the dog's skull and down the neck like the natural markings of a coat.
The face is gentle and unmistakably a working dog: a broad, blocky muzzle, soft ears folded back against the head, a defined brow over quiet eyes, and a carved lip line that gives the jaw real weight. Around the neck, a collar is carved in full relief — a raised band with stitch detail running its length, standing proud of the fur so it catches light from across a room. Small touch, but it's the detail that separates hand work from a machine copy.
Behind the head, the handle sweeps into a long, smooth derby grip with a generous palm swell. This is the shape that actually carries weight comfortably — your hand rests along the top rather than pinching a knob, which is why derby handles have been the standard for serious daily-use canes for over a century. The carved side faces forward; the polished side does the work.
The dark handle is set against a pale blond shaft with a fine red accent ring at the joint — a deliberate, high-contrast pairing that reads as sharp and modern rather than rustic. Both are finished to a deep gloss that brings the laurel's figure up to a near-three-dimensional shimmer.
